Linux is easily taking the server and geek market but the market were you need to be cool and very userfriendly is not coming to Linux. Linux is just out of ideas and can’t show anything, Linux isn’t a desktop – Linux is still the old terminal with all the commands and the ugly startup and then they are the “Linux inside” people which create a distribution and create all around Linux but as the oldschool Linux is still inside, it doesn’t change… Linux is without a vision – a system that will never suceed because its only like DOS, Linux would win market against DOS but it stopped after that… there are the projects that try to bring desktops for Linux like KDE and Gnome but they are not Linux. Like there is one desktop for Windows and Mac OS X that really wins the people there should be one for Linux but there isn’t, what makes Linux what it is, just better then DOS and only for geeks better then Windows. Apples ideas around x86 are just crazy, limiting and not limiting, they would win people when they would open their system but it looks like they want to wait until Mac OS XI.
Linux wake up and join the straigt idea of Windows and Mac, or keep on geeking and never win the big desktop.

Excuse for my ugly english, but… maybe I’m a geek, but you cannot say I’m a geek like something bad.
I spent time to learn how to get a linux machine perfectly working. And when you get this (when everything works), there’s no way for any other OS… just ’cause you get just what you need: cool graphic, cool desktop, every piece of hardware wornking, and nothing more.
That’s why you need time to get this.
Now my machine is working really better. Somethings trhat never worked on Windows now works perfectly (just the matter of some hours of nice “work”). Everything is faster. And nouw, really beatiful.
I’ve got possibilities, a lot, everithing that came on my mind to simplify my work has some software written by someone that could be useful….powerful syncing tools, nice mediacenters, everithing you wants about remote working, hardware for astronomy or chemistry, GIS (and powerful)… and you can install everithing, everithing, just pressing a button (i’m using Debian…you Windows users can only dream about such a installer like apt and Synaptic)!
And more, i’ve got control of my software. I can control everithing, change everything to my needs.
I’ve got a lot of power on my machine than you, I can do lot of things more… and so, I’ve got to study more, to learn, search, ask google, spend time. Power is not gratis for no one, if you can configure everithing for you specific need, than you need to configure everithing.
Is jus a matter of lazyness.
Linux will never win the “big desktop”, it is not possible. There are a lot of users too much lazy to get control of everything, users that wants everithing precooked.
If you, User, are too much scared, or maybe lazy, to learn something really easy and a little bit new… beh, you’re guilty.
Informatic analphabetism is not something good at all, and nothing to claim.
You can chose to leave the control of your hardware and software to something else, and pay him for this work, and you can use Windows. You get something, and you lose something. You will save a bit of your time, for sure.

Agreed with the above commenter. Linux Desktop, even if it doesnt win, it has my support. I just use the GUI available and dont bother much about the commands, that way, am comfortable with it. But I do feel its for the geeky inclined, and not for those who just “ON, Wordpad, type, Close”.
